Vegas to the Grand Canyon and Back
Recently, my wife and I were in Las Vegas. We decided, after much debate to book a helicopter tour to the Grand Canyon for our own enjoyment and to hopefully get a cloud shot for the day. Those of you who follow the project know that I did – http://www.clouds365.com/6-12-10 – What a day and experience that was. Perfect weather, perfect clouds and SO happy that I “got the shot”, probably the best one of the entire year!
After going through the hundreds of photographs, I decided to post 8 additional images I liked the best starting and ending in Las Vegas. I hope you enjoy these. I loved capturing them!
Something a little different – 5-04-10
I flew from Dallas to San Francisco today. I always have my camera out when I fly trying new things, especially after I know I have my shot for the day. This series was shot with a ND-4 filter and using a custom setting I set up on the camera (Canon 5D Mark II) to shoot Black and White. The clouds are ground were perfect for this. Thought I would share a few with you.
More from Boston – 4-05-10
Was organizing images after my latest trip to Boston and decided to post these four images. They were selects on April 5, but were not chosen. I thought someone might like to see them ![]()
3-24-10 – Extra Storm Images
Driving up the Dallas North Tollway on my way home for the night, I noticed a wall cloud starting to build off in the distance. As I got closer to the storm, I knew I had to get off and pick a spot because I had to get the shot! It had started to rain, there was lightning everywhere. It was spooky for sure. I managed to take 30-40 images, all different exposures. I was praying I got something because I could not look at the preview. I was really happy when I started going through these. It was hard to choose. I posted this one (3-24-10-part-2). I had 5 selects that I liked. I had to share the other 4 images I did not post.
Snow Day in Frisco, Texas
A foot of snow in Frisco, Texas (Suburb of Dallas) is unheard of. First time it has happened. Trees down, power out in some places, it is a mess around here. I know parts of the East coast was hit bad, but this is unbelievable for us. I had a hard time choosing the image for the day, because I liked them all. I ultimately chose 2-12-10 because it had a little more cloud definition than the others. Thought I would show you the other selects for the day.
More From Malibu
The last 2 days are the reason why I started this blog, to post images that did not get picked as a daily image. I shot over 500 images yesterday. I was so excited to be in a new place and great clouds. I probably over did it, but it was fun. I am back in Dallas tonight, cleaning up my images from the trip. Wanted to share these 4 images.
More from 1-27-10
I had a few images left over from my day yesterday that I thought worthy to share. At meetings all day, then Malibu this evening. There might be a beach shot in my future!
Must Be Love
I woke up this morning surprised to find out that my wife and my 3 year old daughter had been out photographing the sunrise. Turns out, my daughter handed the car keys to my wife so they could go “go get a cloud picture” (she hears me say that all of the time) she knew the power lines and trees in our backyard would obstruct the shot! So, off in robes and pajama’s to capture the moment.
My girls are treating this project as something you just do everyday, a part of life… taking pictures of clouds. I was very touched. I thought I would share the picture with you.
More From 1-16-10
Good day for clouds yesterday. I shot most of the day. I had 3 images I was choosing from later in the day. I chose 1-16-10 – Part 2. Here are the 2 I did not post. I though were very nice to show here
Fort Worth Museums
One of the most difficult things about this project is coming up with creative shots when there are no clouds. It is rather stressful. For the last few days we have been in a pattern of no clouds at all. I was very happy to be going to one of my favorite places; The Modern and KImball Museums in Fort Worth, Texas. The grounds and buildings are amazing, so I knew I would have no trouble getting a good “No Clouds” shot if the clouds never came in. So happens, right before we left, a small batch of cirrus clouds moved in and I got the shot I wanted (12-27-09). Here are four of my favorites I would have chosen from.
12-09-09 – What a day!
Today was a great day for shooting clouds! I captured the image below on the way home from work. I was just about to post it when my wife tapped me on the arm and told me to look outside. Tonights sunset was amazing - 12-09-09-part-2. Obviously it beat out this shot. Since it was prepared to post already, I thought I wouldn’t waste it
Nice stratocumulus cloud!
Thanksgiving in Oklahoma
The 24 hours we were in Oklahoma for Thanksgiving, I took about 300 images. Some of them are keepers, others I trash as soon as I import them into my library. I posted 3 images from the trip (see Thanksgiving Week). I had another 6 images that were strong candidates, but did not make it into the main site. Here they are. Hope you enjoy
Red Sky
This image is probably one of the better of the year. Unfortunately, I had already posted an image earlier for the day (11-08-09) and I was working on a time lapse video to post in the evening (11-08-09-video). I generally only post max 2 a day – on really good days.
I love this image and its color. There was no manipulation at all. This is what I witnessed. The red was in the sky for 5 minutes, the disappeared
October Extra’s
I was going through my library today, doing a little clean up. I came across these 4 images that I wanted to share. They would never see the light of day otherwise.
Good shooting day
This shot was my 3rd candidate for yesterday. I like the micro burst in the distance and the new Dallas Cowboy’s billion dollar Stadium lower left. Loved this shot, but I thought the other 2 images were stronger. What do you think? Did I make the right choice? Here are the image I posted yesterday: 9-24-09 or 9-24-09-part-2
Another 9-09-09
Most days there is a clear cut best image of the day. I never really know until I get into the selects for the day and edit them. 4 times so far I have had a hard choice and I could not make up my mind. In those cases I bring in the pro… my wife, the photographer. She liked today’s image, due to the complexity and color. She also thought it was more interesting. Thought I would post today’s alternative and let you be the judge.
Italy… Texas
If you have ever driven on I-35 in between Dallas / Ft. Worth and Waco you have driven through the small small town of Italy, Texas. This is an odd small town. Being off of 35, they thought they could capitalize on tourist. Sure, it is logical. Build an ice cream shop in the shape of Starship Pegasus. The town also boast of having a monolithic community. “The Monolithic Institute”
I always smile going through Italy. Great rest stop spot though. I couldn’t post these on the site. Glad I get to share them here
Stormy Night
I was in the process of winding down the evening, when I noticed lightning flashes out the window. I tried to let it go, but could not. The lure of capturing lightning shots is always too great for me to ignore. Packed up my gear and went to a construction site with no one around and set up. The storm was ahead of me, but it was moving away fast. I did not get everything I wanted, but that is always the case. I posted the best lightning shot last night – 8-20-09 Part 2
Here are the remainder of my selects from the evening. Overall, I think it went pretty well.
Hard to choose
I always have my camera on and ready to shoot, even in the car. Sometimes you get lucky. This morning, I was sitting in traffic, looked over and captured today’s image (8-18-09). It could not have been more perfect. A few minuites later up the road I stopped again and captured the image below. Hard to choose! I try my best to be representative of my every day life and I thought that a commuting image would be better. My wife, (editor and professional photographer) trumped me and suggested I go with the stronger shot. Nice to be able to choose.
8-01-09 Panoramic
The sky was amazing on August 1st. I posted 2 shots that day. The evening sky just lit up. I created a Panoramic shot, was not sure what I would do with it. Is is 7 shots stitched together using an amazing program called DoubleTake. Here is the shot.
